Seniors4Seniors is a nonprofit corporation that enables meaningful connections between students and senior members of our community seeking opportunities to serve one another.
Our Seniors are Giving Back! Sacrificing independence when moving to a senior residence community can be challenging. Many seniors in senior community settings have clear and active minds and a desire to be contributing members of society. You have had rich life experiences and fulfilled successful careers, and yet may find yourself with limited opportunities to share or apply your experience and knowledge in meaningful ways. You may feel unneeded and unappreciated. Your Contributions are Needed!
Many studies, have identified the significant value and importance of connecting youth with seniors. When they serve each other, the lives of the seniors and the youth are greatly enhanced and contribute to overcoming many of the challenges these two groups commonly face, including loneliness, isolation, depression and suicide. Through serving each other their feelings of self worth and their happiness are increased.
High School students, often seniors, are seeking enriching service opportunities to fulfill graduations requirements. Some requirements are for service hours. Other requirements are tied to challenging senior projects, including the involvement of a mentor. The time commitments for the service ranges from 15 to 20 hours. These students want to perform meaningful service, yet these types of opportunities are difficult to find.
How Can I Help?
You can be a mentor. The student may be interested in the same career field you worked in, enabling you to share your experience, perspective and counsel regarding that field. Whether the student’s need for service is general or specific to a project, the experience they gain through scheduling meeting times, interacting with you and recording information regarding their visits helps the student to develop valuable skills for use in their life. Perhaps of greatest value is the opportunity to serve another person, experiencing the joy that comes from service.
Both yours and the student’s lives are enriched through service to each other.
Do You Want to Help?
The only requirement of participants is to take the time for meaningful communications with the senior or youth they connect with. There is no cost for participating except their time and caring hearts. There are also no costs to organizations that help by facilitating these connections. The costs for operating Seniors4Seniors is covered by voluntary donations from individuals and organizations. This opportunity to give back to a worthwhile cause is open to all capable seniors and high school age youth willing to serve and maintain appropriate and safe interactions.
